This is my trip report of the Lion Head Winter Route on Mount Washington, April 25 2003. I decided to climb Mount Washington because I was traveling to Boston for a coffee trade show. As Mount Washington was the most interesting feature and closest to Boston, it was an easy choice. The lodge was full so I camped at the Barnes Field Campground about six miles north of the the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. The grade on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail was very reasonable up to the fire road. The bottom half was rocky and slightly muddy, the top half was snow covered but not too slippery. As we entered the Lion Head Winter Route, the angle increased, and the layer of snow started to become challenging. We decided that it was time to put on crampons when it became obvious that progress would be tough (not safe) without them. By the way, I heard a story about some people that attempted this route without crampons only to find at some point that they could not go any higher, or descend safely either. The weather is different every day on this mountain, bring the right gear.
